Apex Legends : Overview

Table of Contents

A free-to-play battle royale game from Respawn Entertainment, this game title was published by Electronic Arts in 2019 and is now in its fourth season, with each season running for three-months. Apex Legends, set in Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall universe, sees up to 20 three-person squads land on the game island. First task is to scavenge for weapons and supplies whilst watching out for other teams as they grab weapons and join the fight. Players also have to keep moving to stay inside the play area. Last team standing wins the game.
The game emerged out of stealth, with no prior marketing, and game experts assuming Respawn was working on a third version of the Titanfall game.

Apex Legends has been reviewed well as a potential competitor to Fortnite Battle Royale and it pulls gameplay elements from a number of game genres and titles. In fact, Fortnite’s February 2020 season launch appears to have taken some inspiration from the new title too. The new online sensation had achieved 50 million players within the first month after publishing and 70 million monthly players by October 2019.

In the game, players choose from pre-built characters dubbed “Legends,” which include outlaws, soldiers, misfits and, as per Apex, “misanthropes,” and each character has their own set of skills. Apex says the game is a “strategic battle royale,” with players combining skills to make up their squads and needing to master their Legend’s abilities.
Combat and gameplay features include Respawn Beacons, Smart Comms, Intelligent Inventory and Jumpmaster deployment.

Apex Legends’ esports tournaments have already begun and EA will launch the first Apex Legends esports league in 2020 with the Apex Legends Global Series. The circuit will have 12 global live events, including four “majors,” where the game’s top PC players will compete. The Apex Legends Global Series Championship will have a $1 million prize pool, with over $3 million in prize money committed to the tournament in total.

Top Tips

1

Choose the right Legend

Though legends are evenly matched in Apex Games, each has its own ability. It’s important to choose a Legend that matches your style of play, your teammates choices and perhaps even your personality.

Electronic Arts suggests Gibraltar if you want to be a shield for your team or Pathfinder if you want to be your team’s navigator and find the best spot to attack from.  If you want to be your team’s healer then combat medic Lifeline is your best choice. If you are happier being on the offensive and taking down opponents, then super-fast Wraith could be the legend for you or even Bangalore who also has a speed boost as well as her Smoke Launcher. If you’re the kind of player that wants to hold all the answers at a push, then Bloodhounds ability to track enemies and locate clues in an area could suit you most.

Know the Arena

The Apex Legends map, Kings Canyon, has its own unique features, from buildings and outposts to abandoned military installations there are lots of places to find loot and hide. Some are more exposed than others, some will give you the higher ground to attack from, and other locations will provide you the gear haul you need for an advantage in the game.

#
3

Pick the right gear from the right place

If you’re an experienced player then you might feel comfortable going for the best loot always in the busiest places on the map. You know you have to be quick to gear up and deal with opponents also looking for the best haul fast. Picking higher tier weapons and armour will give you a better chance of winning the match. But if you are less experienced, then you may want to go for quieter areas and mediocre loots while you brush up on your Apex Legends skills.

Stick with your Squad

Apex Legends is all about team play and not about individual success. Your team’s choice of Legends should usually compliment each player. While in the game it’s critical to communicate clearly and concisely and stick together so you can combine your abilities when attacking or defending from opponents. If you drift away from your team, there’s a good chance you’ll encounter another Squad which has stuck together, and you’ll be outnumbered with your own team mates too far away to assist.

Use the game’s top features to your advantage

The first feature worth a mention here is reviving teammates. Working closely with your squad and potentially having an adept rescuer and healer means you all stand a betting chance of success. Once nearby opponents are taken out by surviving teammates a nominated Legend can also visit the Respawn Beacon and regenerate a downed player giving back a three-person advantage for the matc.

Other features to make the most of are things like jump towers and hot zones. Using these features can make a real difference to exit a sticky situation, move faster or advance in the game with the best loot available.
